All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

Racses

Which of these things is inherently racist?

Calling someone cracker?
Calling someone Jew boy or Heebie?
Calling someone a taco?
Calling someone a chink?
Calling someone a nigger?

Telling someone they can't attend a school because they are (insert racial group)?
Telling someone they can't attend a school because of their academic performance?
Telling someone they can't attend a school because they wouldn't "fit in"?
Telling someone they can't attend a school because they wouldn't "be happy" in the "environment"?

Telling someone they can't have a job because they are (insert racial group)?
Telling someone they can't have a job because someone else is a member of a "preferred" group?

Telling someone that they should stay with "their own kind"?
Telling someone they should only date/marry "their own kind"?

Spelling "Racist", as "Racses".

The list could go on.  I'm going to suggest to you that every single example on the list isn't at all racist.  That's right, NOT RACIST.

Do you know how I know those things aren't racist?  Black people do and say them.

I don't know exactly what Sterling said.  Apparently he objects to his trophy booty call hanging out and flirting with black guys.  He's a rich Jew who wants what he is paying for.  Who cares?  This is a domestic issue not a racial one.  Sterling plays his black millionaire ball players, millions of dollars to play ball for him.  I could use some of that discrimination.

The latest now is that there are strong indications that she set him up for this whole kerfuffle, and is now indulging in a little polite extortion to make some money for not releasing the rest of the recordings.

She was hanging out with Magic Johnson and now he is publicly sniffing around to buy the team with his backers? Kind of makes one a little curious, at least it does me.

I think the whole thing is crap.

This guy was brought up in the 1940's. It was common thinking then that people hung out with, socialized with and married within "their own kind". This wasn't considered racist by anyone, including blacks, back then. That is what he grew up with. This was what was taught in this country as official policy until the late 1960's and 1970's. Expecting an 80 year old man to change his core beliefs that he was taught decades ago because they are no longer in fashion is silly. He pays his black employees very well. The fact he doesn't want his eye candy flirting with them doesn't make him a bad man.

Apparently no one has ever heard what blacks think about interracial relationships, especially black women think about black men dating white women. In the words of Chris Rock, black women hate black men dating white women worse than old white southern men. In my experience this is true.

  3. He's been targeted. The stated cause is not the real cause, I've read that Jesse Jackson will boycott companies that don't donate enough to him. It's just simple thuggery.

Oh I totally agree with you Res. A lot of liberals just can't grasp the concept of what society was like back then. They refuse to look at it through those lenses. They look back then at history with modern lenses and wonder why they are shocked. There is a real disconnect there. Same with the Duck Dynasty guys and rancher Bundy. They get excoriated for talking about what life was actually like "back in their day".

Hubby and I watched some Mary Tyler Moore episodes on DVD last year and while they were still entertaining, I could not believe how dated they were. Also showed how bad a lot of current TV really is.

  6. I love the old tv and movies. they had a lot gong for them. We've had that form of media for close to 90 years. It's mazing to go back and see how "normal" has changed. I saw Leave it to Beaver in reruns as a kid. That really was "normal" at one time.

I remember a race related conversation that occurred between on of the owners of Interlake Shipping and a black employee. The old white man (the owner) was talking to a middle aged black man on the docks. The old man used terms like "boy" and "negro" and spoke in a somewhat paternal tone. The conversation drew the attention of the younger white guys who had heard parts of it and who took offense. Of course nobody was going to say anything to the old man, at least not to his face.

The back man didn't have a problem with how he had been treated or talked to. He said that he realized that the old man was just acting and treating him the way he was taught. It was a matter of how things were done, and the old man was acting respectful and polite according to how he had been raised. He knew that he had not been disrespected or demeaned and wasn't offended.

I wonder how many NBA players have ever said something like, "I don't want to see you bringing that nigger around". If you banned every player that ever said the "N word". Jesse Jackson wouldn't be able to get a private suite to watch the game because they'd have to close down the whole league.

Yep. A similar thing happened with my father-in-law, at the VA clinic here, a few years back before he died. My wife took him to an appointment, and the regular aide that normally attended to him -- a young, black woman -- was busy elsewhere. Just as she came round, my FIL asked something like, "Where's that colored girl?"; of course, the young woman heard it. In all other aspects, my FIL was courteous and polite with her.

Later, out of earshot of her father, my wife apologized to the aide for his language. The young lady assured her that it was no problem, that most of the veterans his age talked like that, that she was used to it and took no offense -- it was just the manner of speech when they were raised.

That was rather informative in how context is the most important aspect of so-called "racist" speech.

    WB,

Around my great grandfathers nigger was used. They didn't say it to blacks, just used it among their own old white friends. Those men were born around the 1910's. Around blacks negro was the term they used. Negro was also what the blacks used. Colored was another term that was used when politely referring to someone's race. Both races talked this way. NAACP is an organization for Colored people. UNCF is a college fund for Negro's.

I would never call a black person a nigger because the term is meant to be demeaning. When blacks call each other nigga, hoe, bitch, etc in casual conversation, its hard for me to understand why they care what a 80 year old Jew says to his mistress.

  9. Racism is nothing more than a word used to divide the already divided. It is an excuse, a method, an agenda of those who wish to benefit. They are Hell bound petal to metal.

They are so screwed up to even give them a mention is to fall for it.

    They should be ignored!

I am old enough to understand Paula Deen's reference to the word she used when a black kid stuck a gun in her face back in the 80's. That kid deserved exactly what he got from Paula. No respect.

There are just some in the black community that don't deserve respect when they pull stuff like that. She should never have had her career derailed like that. That punk deserved what he got. And it was something like 30 years ago.

Does that make me a racist? I do not believe so. I have never used that word in any context, but I would not punish Deen for using it.

Reminds me of the Holy Grail:

LAUNCELOT: We were in the nick of time, you were in great peril.
    GALAHAD: I don't think I was.
LAUNCELOT: Yes you were, you were in terrible peril.
GALAHAD: Look, let me go back in there and face the peril.
    LAUNCELOT: No, it's too perilous.
GALAHAD: Look, I'm a knight, I'm supposed to get as much peril as I can.
LAUNCELOT: No, we've got to find the Holy Grail. Come on!
GALAHAD: Well, let me have just a little bit of peril?
    LAUNCELOT: No, it's unhealthy.
    GALAHAD: Bet you're gay!
    LAUNCELOT: No, I'm not.

  13. OutlawX,

If a black man, Hispanic, Asian, Jew, Pollack, Itie, etc wants to pay me millions of dollars a year to play a game that I enjoy, he/she/transgendered can call me white boy, cracker, paleface and tell their trophy toy not to hang out with "my kind" all they want; just so long as they keep the checks coming.
