All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

Maybe

Mrs. Ipsa and the kids left today for two weeks of being spoiled by the grandparents.

I'm lonely.  So very, very lonely.  I need a lot of love, yet I have a lot of love to give.  So I went looking for love on the Internet.  This is what I found:

He's only 2 months old.  Of course he is a German Wirehaired Pointer, AKA the greatest dogs on earth.  He's a rescue dog, that's why he's behind bars.  I put in an adoption request and I'm waiting to hear something back.  When you get a pure bread GWP rescue dog they generally don't hunt, which is why they got the boot in the first place.  In the old days they put down pups that didn't show prey drive.  While a non hunter isn't ideal for me, neither is shelling out the cash for the bloodline I want.  Somebody has to poop all over the back yard and I hate not having a dog.

UPDATE

The little guy found a home.  So I'm back to surf'n the web look'n for a friend.

Good luck, I hope you get him. Two months seems to be a bit young to say he won't hunt at all, but admittedly, I don't know much about hunting dogs in the first place so I defer to your expertise.

We've also been dogless, for a couple of years now...but we just don't spend a lot of time at home nowadays to raise a dog right, so we're probably going to wait until retirement before getting another.

But my daughter just rescued a pit bull (possibly a mix), and she is just the sweetest little thing (the dog. Well, my daughter, too, but in an entirely different way.)

WGjr is a sweet thing, or was when I last saw her. It's been so long since I was down that she's probably grown up married and has kids of her by now.

When evaluating a pointing dog 4 weeks old is a good time to start. All you do is put a bird wing (from a game bird) on a bit of fishing line and dangle it for them. You keep human sent off it and see how they react. Most dogs will chase it around and try to bite it. The dogs you are looking for are the ones who “freeze and point”. The dog isn’t going to point perfect or freeze for long but that’s ok. As they get older 3 or 4 times a week you repeat the exercise. Anything the dogs do or don’t do between 4 and 6 weeks of age is practice and doesn’t count much. After 6 weeks though most breeders are starting to think about which dogs they will keep and which they will cull. If a dog hasn’t given at least a couple of solid points (even if they were very short) he’s not going to make the cut; after 10 weeks of age, no pointing, no point in keeping the dog in the program.

Some dogs DO hunt and get “with it” when they are 3 to 4 months old but that doesn’t happen too often. If you’re serious about your pointer you’re making the decision early, because the next month is all about holding point and styling up the dog. The great dogs will cast scent almost automatically. Then its just steady to wing and shot and retrieves. If you want to get fancy you throw in honoring.

My Abby was stead to wing and shot by 4 months old and doing perfect land retrieves 1 week latter and water retrieves that same month. She was rock solid on point at 5 weeks old. That’s what most guys are looking for.

Grown up, yes; married, no; kids, no.

But those other two are definitely in her future. Or so she says.

I just have to make do with the one grandson, for now.

Here's to hoping you can find the love you're looking for!

  4. Glad to hear she is doing well.

I've called on another dog but so far they haven't got back to me.

Such a cutie. And rescues make such good dogs. It's as if they know.
