All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

Ha! I just spent an hour shoveling 3 foot drifts from my driveway; if the coward turns tail and runs back down into its burrow, I'll be first in line to fillet the little prick.

  2. I was told DIA was getting hammered.

If it makes you feel better we got snow too. Nearly two inches. I need to get it moved before I go to work. This will be the second time I use our new snow blower this year.

"If it makes you feel better we got snow too. Nearly two inches."

How is your seasonal total so far compared to average?

We got around 16" in my neighborhood over the past two days -- hard to measure exactly with the wind blowing it all around so much. As I said, there were drifts up to 3 feet in my driveway, but other areas were only 6-8 inches deep.

I keep debating about getting a snow blower, just for storms like this. We had one back in Michigan because it snowed so heavily all the time, but there's only a couple times a year where it's heavy enough here that shoveling is far more time-consuming. Hard to justify the expense now, but I suspect it'll look like a much better deal the older I get.

All in all, though, I can't really complain about two days off work for weather shutdowns. Oh, and Phil didn't see his shadow, so I guess we're in for an early spring.

  4. We don't get that much snow on the prairie. Year to date I believe the whole state is on the low side. Unless you've moved since I last visited your driveway isn't too bad of one to shovel. A good quality self propelled snow blower will pay for its self after about 5 good snows. I don't know if they plow your street, but having the snow blower lets you move a swatch of snow on the street so when they bring the plow thru they don't burry you back in again.

No, the driveway itself isn't too bad...it's the sidewalk that's the real hassle. City code requires homeowners to clear the snow from the sidewalks on their property (the property lines go out to the street, but they have easements for sidewalks). And being on a corner lot, the sidewalk stretches well over 200', front and side together.

And no, they usually don't plow my street...only the main one it connects to. If I get out and shovel before driving over it and packing it down, I can clear the patch of street beside the driveway with a shovel, too. I've even had to shovel the ruts of snow at the stop sign, too, to get people unstuck who high-centered over the ruts. That's definitely something a snow blower would be good for.

Maybe I can start a GoFundMe campaign amongst my neighbors to get a snow blower for keeping the intersection clean?

  6. I'd bet they'd do it and then you'd be stuck blowing the snow for them all winter.

  7. I won't be without a snowblower. They are a pain in the butt to keep going but shoveling really sucks.

Somebody did a study about 20 years ago that discovered that most people who were not previously at risk for heart attacks will get one if they get out there and shovel their driveway/sidewalks clear of snow.

Something to think about, especially as one ages. WaterBoy, you would be really surprised at what is worth the cost the older you get. Because age suddenly makes you appreciate convenience and you realize that your time is more valuable than you used to think.
