All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

Waterboy is going to give me crap for this but I can handle it.

BREAKING NEWS:
Unarmed US Marines foil suspected terrorist attack onboard high-speed train between Amsterdam and Paris after they take down Kalashnikov-wielding Moroccan gunman known to intelligence services
A group of unarmed US Marines on board a high-speed train between Amsterdam and Paris foiled a terrorist attack after a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle, wounding three people.
The 26-year-old Moroccan national, who was known to security services, came out of the toilet brandishing the gun and opened fire. Fortunately, two US Marines were nearby and overpowered him before he could massacre passengers.
The suspected terrorist had at least nine full magazines of ammunition holding almost 200 rounds. He was also carrying a knife.
Unfortunately, one of the Marines was shot and is believed to be in a critical condition.
The last I knew we don't have Marines based in either Paris or Amsterdam.  My guess is these men were on leave and doing some sight seeing around Europe.  I could be wrong, they could be embassy personal, but that seems unlikely.

Tourists or possibly embassy duty is my guess. Saw this earlier today and I am sure those passengers on the train were thrilled for the most part to survive their trip.

The Marines can be very proud of themselves and how they handled this. I hope the European liberal weenies treat them with a little gratitude and respect for saving their sorry bacon, yet again.

As to Waterboy, when the trains run under water, we know he will be right there to handle the situation and save the day.
Sorry, but I just could not resist.

  3. Waterboy was in the air force and he gets on my case for glorifying the Marines. As he points out, I never served.

I figured he was a Navy Seal given his handle. Now I am going to have to work hard not to snark on his handle. j/k Waterboy. My FIL was AF.

In fact, if he had not gotten pneumonia when he did, he would have been part of that glider raid over Tokyo during WWII and probably would have died in that raid. So Yippee for pneumonia.

Evidently some officer decided it would be good for training to march the guys around the field in their skivvies in below freezing weather.

Waterboy, when the AF does something awesome and heroic like these Marines did, then we will properly gush over the deed. You know what else, it doesn't matter if you or my husband never served. I have no patience for that attitude from any service person.

There are many, MANY ways to serve Res. Never forget that and don't ever let anyone tell you differently. In fact Ms. Betsy Ross may not have served either, but she sewed the first flag, did she not? No modern service personnel will top that one in my book.

Res Ipsa: "Waterboy was in the air force and he gets on my case for glorifying the Marines. As he points out, I never served. "

Wait...what? When have I ever given you guff for not serving?!? That's not how I look at it, at all.

  4. Meh, they were Marines, thus, probably lost. If there was a 2nd LT in the group, definitely lost.

    Paying taxes doesn't really count.

Between my 18th and 23rd birthday the US armed forces were on a program of troop reduction. I attempted on 3 occasions to enlist during those years. My friends that were in, received buy outs to leave service early with honorable discharges.

When I was 27 years old I was approached about going air guard as a pilot, with the expectation that I would accept both a civilian job at Selfridge AFB as well as a career conditional position with the airwing. I agreed that I would accept a posting to fly transports and not request A10 school until I had at least 8,000 hours flt time. (in other words I wasn't going to get a seat in an A10) There were some other things they wanted me to agree to as well. Which I did, just so I could serve. I even started private flight lessons on my own. Because (due to training schedules) I would not be able to be commissioned prior to my 28th birthday they decided rescind the offer the day before I was to sign up.

    It's not like I didn't try.

    1. Paying taxes didn't even cross my mind. One way you are serving your country is you and your Mrs. are taking care to rear two good and decent future citizens. When you look at the current social climate, that is HUGE Res.

Never underestimate the power of the family farmer. He and his wife plant many seeds early in a child's life that don't come to fruition until years down the road sometimes. A good and stable family is just as important as being a military guy. I don't believe you can have one without the other.

That friend, is what I mean by many ways of serving.

OREGON Air National Guard. My state and Guard rocks. They get lots of practice rescuing fools off of Mt. Hood and other places when they get into mischief. Very pleased with the bravery of the Oregon guys.
