All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

Sympathy for the Dobson

About the time I went to work in the gas fields I started listening to Christian radio.  Locally we have a station that rebroadcasts sermons and other half hour shows that have Christian themes.  The most famous of the themed broadcasts was James Dobson's Focus on the Family.

I don't know much about Focus on the Family beyond what I've seen in other media outlets over the years.  I'm not a close follower.  I doubt I've heard that many complete broadcasts.  Dr. Dobson seems like a nice guy who is concerned about America's traditional Christian morals and values.

Today I saw a link.  I was bored.  I followed the link.  That decision led me to discover some very disturbing information.  It seems that Focus on the Family has gone full blown wacko-feminist-anti-marriage.  They don't call it that.  Doing that would be counter productive.  Some of the sheep might recognize the wolf if they did.

I did some more research trying to see if I could get to the bottom of what was going on.  I didn't.  I learned some things about the organization and found some disgruntled employees who were reframing their dissatisfaction in terms of biblical language.  No one seems to want to address what is abundantly clear.  Focus on the Family has embraced the culture over the Creator.

They are working to evangelize and convert Christians to the world.

What about Dr. Dobson?  It seems that he had a plan in place to transition out of leadership.  That is a function of a responsible leader.  I don't fault him for that.  As far as I can tell from available information Dr. Dobson is taking the high road and not airing anyone's laundry.  In turn Focus gave him a million bucks to go start a new radio show and leave them alone.

I wonder, would it have been better if Dobson stayed and fought them?

As things stand now Focus on the Family is an organization with over $100,000,000 in annual income, a large presence in the Christian community and a degree of creditability and respectability created by Dr. Dobson.  They are using those assets to promote the transformation of the Christian family into the culture.

I wonder if John Daly walks around Colorado Springs singing:

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name

Had Dobson fought them he may have torn down the very organization he built with his own hands.  In the finial analysis that may have been the best course of action.

The road is indeed narrow and few find it. I think even fewer walk on it.

    2. I figured that. I read there often.

  3. There's a reason Vox wrote SJWAL. They need to be fought tooth & nail at every step. Being nice doesn't make one a Christian. Dobson should have followed Christ's example and gone after them with his belt.

    1. I think it was Monday, but Rush talked about a study done at USC (iirc) that looked into the subject of "should one apologize for having an opinion" on something controversial. Sounded to me like the study actually proved Vox's book.

Too many Churchians today don't want to deal with harsh facts and realities. They want their ears tickled on Sunday with goose down feathers. So for them, the OT is something to be avoided.

They don't understand that Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy something near 46 or so times during his ministry. That tells me that the OT is not irrelevant, and that the whole Bible is still applicable today as it was yesterday.

  4. I think of Dobson as a true old time gentleman. He was brought up prewar in a strict Christian home. I doubt he had any idea what hit him and probably doesn't even now.

This is so bad. Dobson is at an age of his life that he might not have the energy to put into that fight. But you are right Res, if he is a Christian, he should have fought them tooth and nail, hip and thigh.

The thing here is, Dobson is the face of Focus on the Family that most people think of. He is the one who built it up to what it is today. Now those deviant wolves are going to gleefully tear it down. And take a lot of naive innocents with them.

The Lord is not going to be pleased with these fools.

There was speculation that the reason JCD left when he did was because the board would never allow his son Ryan to replace him after he left his final position hosting the main radio show, due to Ryan's earlier divorce. This, according to an alleged board member speaking anonymously to the New York Times. By leaving and starting a new organization with Ryan, RCD would be able to pass it his legacy along into the family.

Since he had already stepped down as the leader of the organization years before and was only providing a voice for it (voicehead?), he had no way of going back and reestablishing control of it had he wanted to do so.

    2. He may have stepped down as titular head, but he is always going to be the one that most people think of when they hear Focus on the Family mentioned.

If he doesn't want this muck sticking to him, (and it will) he needs to be more vocal about the fact he isn't associated with it anymore. God knows he isn't, but we here on earth sure don't.

"I wonder if John Daly walks around Colorado Springs singing [Sympathy for the Devil]"

No, that would be Doug Bruce.

Also thought you might find this article on Real Men from Dr. Dobson's website interesting, in light of your previous post....

  9. There probably are lots of theories about the who, why and what of things at Focus. Someone probably knows what end is up. I don't. What I discovered is that they are buying into the anti-male marriage model and promoting it.

As far as Ryan Dobson is concerned, I don't think he adds much to the radio show. I don't care for the way Dr. Meg Meeker conducts interviews or comes across on the radio.

I was never a big listener to their show but I found Dobson interesting and thought provoking. I don't see a program based on his involvement and personality surviving after he leaves it.
