Even Code Pink wants Obama impeached. In a radio interview, Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin called for the impeachment of President Obama over his policy of permitting drone strikes on American citizens overseas who are members of terrorist organizations.
On WABC Radio’s “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” Sunday, Benjamin affirmed she believes the drone warfare is an impeachable offense.
She said she would go even further and “broaden” a ban on drone strikes to “end the killing of innocent people overseas in countries where we are not at war without any kind of transparency or accountability.”
Asked Klein: “So would you then call, as the co-founder of Code Pink, for the impeachment of President Obama based on these alleged crimes?” “Sure,” Benjamin responded.I'm not necessarily anti drone. It's a tool and as such it can be used correctly or criminally. I certainly do not agree with everything code pink and its leader have to say. There is buried deeply in their anti war, anti America, pro terrorism tirade a valid point.
No American political leader has the right to assassinate an American citizen. No individual elected or unelected American has the right to execute another American citizen. "But Res...", you object, "what about the death penalty, what about in war?".
It's true American citizens die in both of those circumstances. The difference is that execution under the death penalty is carried out AFTER a legal process in which the accused has access to the means to defend himself against the charges. No one person can order the death. The guilty party is first tried in a court. Under the jury system 12 individuals have to find the citizen guilty, AND the same jury have to recommend the death penalty. The presiding judge can then recommend a lessor sentence if he so chooses. Even if the judge orders the death penalty, there is still a prolonged process of review. Before the sentence is carried out, a number of people will review the facts and reconsider the verdict.
Killing American citizens is war, or other military action, is a different matter. For example, in WWII there were American citizens who fought against the United States. The German American Bund made it a point to recruit German Americans to fight for German, and some did. As members of a military unit fighting against the American military they were likely to be killed. Fighting in a war, isn't the same thing as an execution or assassination. Men in uniform know that men in the other uniform are going to try to kill them, its a part of war, regardless of if one is a volunteer or a conscript.
Obama claims the right to assassinate American Citizens. The method of assignation doesn't matter to me. The drones are tool, not means in themselves. The crime is assassinating American citizens without due process as the means to other ends. The Constitution, Article II Section 4. states that:
The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.I would argue that murder and/or waging war on American Citizens is an impeachable offense. It's time to have the trial. Justice demands that he stand trial for treason as well.
