All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

For Nate

Today is Friday.  By tradition Friday is ATF day at the Blogger Blaster.  This weekend is also Easter so, in honor of ATF and Easter I bring you a beverage that I'm sure Nate would love.

How to Make Peep-Infused Vodka

Go out and get yourself a Glock and a pack of Virgina Slims and Enjoy!

  1. I'm not a fan of peeps. Seems a waste of good Vodka.

Res, the reason I suggested Varget for .308 over at Nate's is because I've been seeing it recommended as the go to powder at sniper's hide for the last 10 years. Also at practical riflery. Perhaps it is selective bias, but I've never noticed anyone recommending 3031.

Varget is OK in .223 and .22-250, but from what I have read, Varget is THE powder in .308.

    Anyway, I admit I don't load .308. We are a .30-06 family. :) [I've used Varget a little there].

  2. 3031 is the old time fav for the 308. It does well but it can be high temp sensitive, it does fine with low temp from what I’ve seen. The reason I asked about Varget is I always thought it a little fast for the heavy bullets.

I don’t believe that what works best for me in my guns works best for everybody. Everyone has their own criteria for what they want their gun to do. My brother just came for a visit and I loaded him a couple of hundred rounds of ammo for his rifle. If he shoots 6 rounds a year out of the gun, he’s done a lot of shooting and killed several deer. If I shoot 600 rounds in a year out of a gun, its because I was spending most of my efforts on something else. It’s all a matter of perspective.

In 30-06 I shoot 4064, but you can use lots of powder for the 06. I think the 06 is one of the least fussy rifles there is to load for. I’ve killed critters with different guns over the years but I keep hunting with my 06 at least 60% of the time. It’s not my “best” gun by any means but I enjoy hunting with it. I still want to take at least one elk, moose and black bear with it. I haven’t made it a goal but I think it would be cool to kill a caribou with it too.

The .30-06 is probably tied with the .223 as the unfussiest rounds to load.

I'd like to hunt with my .30-06 more. It just seems like my 7 mm is good go and my .30-06 I just have not found a load I like yet.

I'm probably going to focus on H4895 for my .30-06. I'm planning on 165 gr or less, and that powder is one I always plan to have on hand as you can do reduced loads with it and it is also good for .223 and .22-250.

You must be an IMR guy. I've always been a Hodgdon guy. I guess I bought into their marketing. They are the same company now.

Nope. 3031 and 4064 are the only two powders they make that I use. I like TAC in 223 because of the lower pressure curve. I was playing around with 77grn bullets for awhile in that gun. I still want to join the 20-20 club but owning a good working rig still alludes me.

I like Win 231 for my 45 and Vini 340 for the 44 mag. It seems that all my 45’s like 231. I’ve been working a lot with Hodgen and Norma for my bench rest rigs. I still don’t have a favorite for those.

I use the Hornady A-max bullets in my 06 and my 7mm. They work great on game and they are remarkably consistent shooters.

  5. I use Amax myself in my 7mm.
