All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

USMC Goes to College

A Marine was attending a college course between missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The professor, an avowed atheist, shocked the class one day when he walked in, looked toward the ceiling, and said loudly, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes."

The lecture room fell silent and the professor began his lecture. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God - still waiting."

It got down to the last minute when the Marine stood up, walked toward the professor and threw his best punch knocking him off the platform and out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat down.

The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you did that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "God is busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to behave like an idiot and say stupid stuff. So He sent me."

This was beyond awesome. Marines are some of the most dedicated and commonsense filled people I have ever known. I have an uncle by marriage on the maternal side who had a very interesting career.

That is one Marine I would be honored to call friend.

  2. My father was USMC Viet Nam. My cousins were USMC. I knew USMC Korea, WWII and WWI growing up. I even know a few running around today.

They're all crazy about being marines. I enjoy getting marine jokes/stories and passing them on. I grew up with it and somehow it just never gets old even though I never served in any branch.

The best and most respectful portrayal of a marine on television is the show NCIS. I just love SA Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The way Mark Harmon portrays him, you would really think that Harmon WAS a Marine. An elder in my church who happens to be a former Marine and retired police detective thinks Harmon does a spot on job. From a guy who not only made gunny sargeant twice, Marine of the year in 1972 IIRC, and was on his way to a career posting at the WH, that is high praise.

In terms of portrayal of military, Harmon is much better than Tom Selleck. Selleck was alright, but Harmon is so much better.
