All in the Family featured the curmudgeonly Archie Bunker. Archie was television’s most famous grouch, blunt, blustering, straightforward and untouched by the PC crowd. He was the archetype of the conservative male. Michael desprately tried to reeducate him, but he persisted in his breviloquence.

Looking back at the last 40 years, we realize: ARCHIE WAS RIGHT!

I don't know if they require a cell phone or some kind of homing/GPS signalling device anymore for climbers on Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier and a couple of others in the NW, but tracking devices and cell phones should be mandatory if you are going to allow people to climb those mountains or ski them.

The stupidest bit of cost cutting legislation that the military wanted to do is to move the air search and rescue unit out of Portland. Did not matter how many lives that were saved by that unit, it was all about the Benjamins. I think our Congress critters got that rescinded though.

Mt. Hood especially is a nasty one during the Spring and that is when they seem to like their climbing.

  2. The transponder that he mentions is one such device. There are commercially available devices that are satellite com in abled that allow triangulation of location. They cost a little, but are very useful and work regardless of weather conditions. Some of them even allow the sender to record a brief message and up load it to the satellite to assist the searchers or communicate their needs.
